Nina Baker,
Artist Statement:
When I make jewellery I find the strongest inspiration and motivations in my immediate surroundings, the urban habitat...
I walk to the train station and admire the paint and gum splats on the ground and collect street sweeper bristles from the kerb side. I ride my bike through warehouse and factory districts and explore the abandoned buildings and take pictures of the peeling paint and broken debris that dangles from the walls. I go to the shops and I buy things, many things come in boxes and packets.
I also take pleasure in the fine and traditional realm of jewellery, connecting to thousands of years of goldsmithing history by making rings, charms and special pieces by hand.
A piece of jewellery can become a sacred object that one imbudes with meaning, memory and story, to work with someone to create their coveted piece is just a little MARVELOUS!
I recieved trainng in traditional and contemporary jewellery manufacture and hold a BA(Jewellery) from Charles Sturt University WaggaWagga.
